Gear Reviews - Haglofs Jaw Soft Shell Jacket

In a nutshell

It's a fancy, good looking, well-fitted stretchy soft shell jacket designed for the slopes (helmet hood, avalanche reflectors, snow skirt).  It's from Haglöfs, so it's not cheap (R.R.P is £275 but it's currently on sale in various places for around £250).

Haglofs Jaw JacketDo buy if...

You love to ski / board a lot and are looking for a robust jacket that'll last.  It's features are tailor-made for those of us who love high altitude difficult descents that require the highest quality gear designed to stretch, protect and adapt to our every move without making us soaked with sweat as we hurtle down slopes with speed.
Don't buy if....
It's going to snow/ rain hard. It's not waterproof (but very water-resistant) so won't be suitable for hardcore mountain activities unless paired with a 'proofer over the top, which will add weight (and since you'd paid over £200 for the jacket, isn't recommended!)

The Pro's

  • Construction - zips, seams and fit all top-notch.  No crap stitching in site.
  • Design - as always, beautiful
  • Material - Windstopper® Soft Shell breathable, reliable, complete windstopper.
  • Durability - from good construction and good materials, you get impressive durability.
  • The hood - definitely an A+, fit is everything to fight the chill whilst wearing a helmet, and this is one of the best.

The Cons

  • The price tag.  At £275 it certainly will price a lot of people out.  I know, I know - you get what you pay for, but somebody somewhere is making a hansom profit.
  • It's not waterproof.  It may just be me, but I want my one jacket for the slopes to be waterproof.  But then I sit on my backside / wait around / get snowed on a lot.

The spiel...

  • Windproof WindStopper fabric incorporates shell and insulation in one fabric
  • Very water resistant due to DWR (Durable Water Repellent) finish
  • Excellent breathability, letting moisture out, keeping you dry
  • Exterior in a woven stretch provides excellent durability
  • Interior of varying thicknesses combines good thermal properties with maximum versatility
  • Stand-alone fleece lined collar with 3-way adjustable hood
  • Recco® Avalanche Rescue System Reflector
  • Integrated, adjustable snow skirt with press studs to attach snow skirt to pants and hinder snow from entering
  • Cuffs with velcro adjustment
  • Full-length, watertight zip with inner wind flap
  • Articulated elbows

  • One napoleon pocket, one laminated sleeve pocket, two long, ventilating torso pockets - all with watertight zips
  • Cord adjustable hem
  • Weight: approx. 645 g (Size M)
